City of London

School for girls

Sport is an integral part of life at all levels of the school.

We pride ourselves on the fact that our provision caters for everyone; from squad players aiming for excellence in competition, clubs open to all, to recreational activities, such as climbing. We believe in a philosophy of 'sport for all' and enjoyment plays a large part in this too. Within the curriculum, we aim to provide a varied programme of activities, encouraging the pupils towards a lifelong appreciation of physical activity, health and general wellbeing.

For more information on sporting teams visit the co-curricular page.

We are proud of the programme offered to the pupils and of the high standards that we achieve. We aim to provide an outlet for pupils to escape the stresses of academic life and to develop their love for sport in a fun and active environment. Pupils have the opportunity to try anything: 'have a go' is our motto, you never know what you can achieve.

We have excellent on-site sporting facilities, including netball and tennis courts, an all-weather pitch, a gymnasium, a fitness room, a heated swimming pool, dance studio and a climbing wall.

We also have the use of the City of London School sports grounds for our sports days.

We believe that on leaving City, girls will have the knowledge and skills to continue their sports, to try new ones and to lead a healthy lifestyle.

During year 7, girls participate in netball, football, gymnastics, dance, health-related exercise, swimming, cricket, athletics and tennis. By year 11, they will have also covered water polo, synchronised swimming, lifesaving, volleyball, badminton, and trampolining, with the option of tasting activities such as boom cycle, pop lacrosse, basketball, karate, handball, multi-gym, pilates, yoga and climbing.

Physical Education, clubs and squads also continue into the sixth form. Students have access to all of the school’s facilities and curriculum PE via an options programme in their general studies lessons. Additionally, pupils can choose to go off-site for their sports, as we utilise external classes in various locations in the City. Cross-country, football, gymnastics and netball squads continue in the sixth form enabling pupils to maintain their commitment to representing the school. There are also recreational clubs open to all for those seeking active, fun alternatives.

A PE Scholarship is available on entry into year 7 or sixth form, to applicants who can demonstrate exceptional ability in one or several sports. The successful pupil will be expected to contribute to the sporting life throughout their time at City as well as being enrolled into our elite performer support programme.

A range of enrichment experiences are offered for both day and residential trips, such as International netball or gymnastics competitions, Tennis at Wimbledon, netball weekends to Shropshire or tours to Spain and Holland, and academic PE conferences. Our biannual gym and dance display also gives our pupils the opportunity to showcase the gym and dance skills that they have learned in lessons and clubs. Furthermore, our elite performer support programme offers guidance and additional help to those athletes balancing their studies with a busy sporting timetable.

All this is in addition to a full and broad extra-curricular programme.
