    In 1982, Sarah Beaumont (class of 1983) was awarded the Worshipful Company of Playing Card Makers' prize, which was presented to the pupil showing the greatest appreciation of the City of London. This early recognition seems insightfully visionary for a pupil who would go on to write and illustrate a book on the capital over 30 years later.

  • Alumna Interview: Gresham Professor of Geometry, Sarah Hart

    For the second edition of the alumnae newsletter we had the privilege of interviewing Professor Sarah Hart (Class of 1993). She is head of Mathematics and Statistics at Birkbeck and in 2020 became the first woman to be appointed to the UK's oldest chair of mathematics. As Gresham Professor of Geometry, Sarah delivers a free lecture series exploring mathematics, culture, and creativity, which can be viewed online here.

  • 'No Salve!' Rediscovering the pleasure in Latin

    It is 1984. The afternoon light is streaming into room B21 at CLSG, a youthful Rupert Everett is glowering appealingly from the newspaper cutting pinned to the wall, *Caecilius est in horto and Mrs Raphael is telling us a magical story about how Constantinople got its name. The world seems easily conquerable; exciting trips to foreign lands await. Latin is fun and our books are full of red ticks and encouraging words in Mrs Raphael’s immaculate italics.

Their two jewellery ventures prove that an entrepreneurial spirit can flourish even with the limitations imposed by the pandemic.

  • Alumna interview: property power businesswoman Elaine Jones

    We are delighted to interview Elaine Jones (née Radford, class of 1975) FRICS. Elaine was honoured as Middle East Woman of the Year in 2007 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in 2012. She was ranked number 84 on the Forbes List – Power Businesswomen in the Middle East 2020.

  • Class of Covid-19: notes from a university student under lockdown

    Miranda Cook (class of 2019) has used the latest lockdown for self-reflection and cultivating new skills. Involvement in university life has given her purpose. She wrote, ‘I have found the sense of community, although not able to rival that of CLSG, has made myself and other students feel more connected and less isolated’.
