This weekend saw the English Schools National Cross Country Cup Finals take place in Sheffield. City had two teams qualify, the junior girls (Year 7 and 8) and the inter girls (Year 9 and 10). City had fought off competition in two previous rounds to get to the finals, making us one of the top 26 schools in the country for cross country. In total, over 400 schools had entered the competition so to reach the final is a fantastic feat in itself.
As the final took place in Sheffield the squads travelled up the night before in order to prepare for race day. On the day, a hearty breakfast was eaten in the hotel (although the junior team may have enjoyed a little too much Nutella!) and then the squad, including a number of parents for support, set off to the race venue. On arrival, the squad pitched the tent and got ready to walk the course. The course was hilly but had a great view, and a couple of down hills to make up for the steep inclines. After walking the course it was race time. Both teams, although nervous, ran fantastic races, giving it everything they had.
The final results were:
Inter team 18th overall
Junior team 9th overall
This places both City cross country squads in the top 20 in the country. Not bad for a school with no fields on site!
