On the 11 March, our German exchanges arrived. Although making conversation was inevitably a little difficult at first, as a result of the language barrier, it wasn’t long before we were chatting effortlessly.
On their first day, we accompanied our exchange partners on a trip to Greenwich. The weather was terrible but combined with lots of weather-related talk, I think this offered the full British experience. We took the boat to Greenwich and enjoyed pointing out the sights on the way (with a little help from the exchanges!). On arrival, we visited the Maritime Museum before eating lunch in Greenwich Market. In the afternoon, we visited the Royal Observatory and its gift shop while waiting for our planetarium show to begin. The show was fascinating and the darkness and squishy armchairs were very much appreciated.
During the rest of the week, the exchanges made excursions with their school group each day and we collected them after school. Some people did activities after school, such as trampolining or shopping, but most of our free time with the exchanges was spent over the weekend. My group went to Oxford Circus and introduced our German friends to some new shops which continued when we took them to a shopping outlet. Other activities included going to the theatre or just chilling at home. Overall, it was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed and one which I look forward to repeating in June when we will go to Germany. I felt that we had been matched up thoughtfully and successfully.
