What do Margaret Thatcher, Lord Horatio Nelson, Florence Nightingale, Luciano Pavarotti and Year 13 leaver Naomi Wei have in common? The answer, rather bizarrely, is that they are all Freemen of The City of London.
To most observers, both inside and outside the CLSG community, it is rather obvious why the first four names in the list would be awarded the honour. However, you need to be a member of our community to even hazard a guess why the fifth name was on the list. Regular readers of these columns will of course know exactly why Naomi is on the list.
In order to make the award more inclusive, the City of London invited the Headmistress to nominate up to two sixth formers who might be worthy of such an award. For her services to mathematics at CLSG, and to maths teams across the length and breadth of the UK and Europe, Naomi was an automatic choice. It was a very deserving award for a wonderful, unassuming girl who worked tirelessly to maximise her gift for mathematics. Naomi will be sadly missed at CLSG, and in particular we will miss the rapturous applause in assembly when her feats were mentioned, but onward and upward. Naomi now goes off to Trinity College, Cambridge to study even more mathematics!
If you ever see Naomi, sword in hand, driving sheep across London Bridge……well, this is now her entitlement!
