CLSG has been a partner school with City of London School (CLS) for the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) for three years. The numbers have been growing steadily and the girls have taken part in a number of field day visits to Portsmouth to learn how to sail, learn about fire fighting on a warship, drive power boats plus a number of leadership games.
The CCF offers a number of camps and courses throughout the year and we have had students attend leadership training as well as activity-based camps. This year we organised a joint trip called Operation Neptune, which ran from 15 to 22 August. This involved chartering three yachts based in Corfu and we took 10 students from CLS and four from CLSG. The trip involved passage-making between mainland Greece and Corfu, and sailing south to stay at Paxos. The students were taught the RYA syllabus for Competent Crew and some were assessed as Day Skipper.
One of the aims of the trip was to commemorate the Corfu Incident. We conducted a service to remember the 44 sailors that were killed in 1946 and, as we were on yachts, held the service in the Corfu channel at the location of the incident. It was an awesome trip with beautiful locations, lots of skills being learnt and an outstanding collaboration between the two schools. Thanks to Lt Cdr Mal Gregory (CLS) for helping to put the trip together.
