Time Magazine

Time Magazine
On 26th November, ten City girls visited Time Magazine’s European office, to see the inner workings of a global, political magazine. While Time uses many of the articles from the American edition, the London office deals exclusively with European issues. They cut articles irrelevant to Europe and add articles that are pertinent to Europeans. They also report issues for the Time website, which, in an age where more and more people get their news solely from the internet, is no longer a sideline.

Our day started in a morning meeting with journalists discussing the main stories of the week. It was fascinating to get an insight into current affairs from the different perspectives that are considered when reporting a story. These days, many journalists gather research directly rather than have information sent to them, which means the logistical problems of writing a story are considerable. However, the advantage of working at a renowned magazine is that both journalists and photographers are willing to drop everything to work for you.

Time Magazine
It was particularly interesting to hear the journalists’ accounts of the 7/7 bombings, when all phone networks were not working and there was fear of further attacks. At the time, Time Magazine was located in Covent Garden, meaning they were close to the action. The dramatic nature of the story and the adrenaline from such fear, chaos and uncertainty made it a thrilling, though tragic, event on which to report. However, the magazine focuses on many different issues, from war to cultural events. For budding journalists like myself, it was definitely an inspiring day.
