Concerts:

There is always a lot going on at City when it comes to musical performances. There are plenty of opportunities for girls to perform and take part in concerts, either as soloists, or as part of an orchestra, a choir, the swing band, the gospel choir, the madrigal group, or a chamber ensemble.

The Autumn concert occurs every other year, alternating with a joint musical production with CLS. This concert is usually an orchestral and choral concert along with a few solo items.

The Leavers’ Concert is the last major concert of the school year and is the last time that we get to hear our older musicians play at the school. Soloists join with the orchestra to play movements from concertos, others perform in small groups and there is always a selection of lighter musical pieces which gives the concert a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.

The Scholars’ Concert is always one of the highlights of the school year. The standard is high and the audience is treated to some wonderful performances from those girls who have won scholarships or awards in music. This concert takes place soon after returning from the summer holidays and sets the tone for the musical year ahead.

Lessons:

The Music Department has a large number of visiting instrumental staff and we can offer individual (and some group) lessons on the following instruments:

Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Recorder, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Harp, Orchestral Percussion, Drum kit, Organ, Guitar (Classical and Electric) and Singing.

Theory

The Director of Music runs an early morning class for those students wishing to take the Grade 5 Theory examination. Some music staff also teach Theory during the instrumental lessons.

Examinations

Under the recommendation of their teacher and with parental consent, the school enters students for the Associated Board Examinations. A few music staff prefer to enter students for other examining boards. Arrangements for these examinations are available directly from those instrumental teachers.
