Mathematics

Maths
The process of "doing" mathematics is far more than just calculation or deduction. It is much more than arithmetic and geometry. Mathematics is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurements and observations that help us understand the world around us.

KEY STAGE 3

In Year 7 students study: factors, multiples and primes, mental methods, sets, geometry, formulae, area, fractions, decimals & percentage, probability, ratio, data handling, simple equations, line graphs, symmetry and simple transformations.

They then build on their knowledge in Year 8, to learn about algebra and constructing formulae, circumference & area of a circle, indices & standard form, speed, distance, time, probability, fractions and percentages, linear equations and inequalities, statistics, polygon and tessellations, more complex linear equations, expanding simple brackets and simple factorisation and Pythagoras Rule.

In Year 9, students progress to studying multiplying out brackets and factorisation, reciprocals, fractions and recurring decimals, upper/lower bounds, simultaneous equations, similar figures, loci, trigonometry, percentages, quadratic equations and graphs and sequences.

Maths homework

GCSE

Students at GCSE level study:

maths in class
  • Number - powers and indices, standard form, rational and irrational numbers, surds;
  • Algebra - simplifying expressions, factorising, solving linear and quadratic equations ;
  • Shape and space - Pythagoras' theorem, trigonometry;
  • Calculus; and
  • Data Handling.
  • Students also compete in the national Maths Challenge Competition and the inter-school Hans Woyda Competition (by invitation).

    SIXTH FORM

    Mathematics and Further Mathematics

    These two subjects enable girls to develop and extend the knowledge and skills learnt at GCSE level, as they study modules such as pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics. The course is challenging and Sixth Form students require an interest, not only in the beauty of maths, but also in how it impinges on the physical world and upon society in general. The course complements a wide range of other A-levels and is helpful to balance Arts or Humanities options.

    The Maths course is one of my hardest AS Levels but the challenge makes it quite enjoyable. Although some of the formulae and ideas can initially be hard to grasp, the teachers are excellent, always patient and willing to help you. We even have a Maths Clinic! The subject is very rewarding because once you have grasped a theory it is easy to remember it to use in future calculations.
