Work Experience Exchange in Trier

In February half term, we took part in a German work experience exchange to Trier on the Mosel. As soon as we were greeted by one of our exchange families at Luxembourg airport, we were immediately immersed into the slightly daunting world of German conversation. Although we were excited to experience life in Germany, we were both worried that our German wouldn’t be up to scratch. A week spent in Trier would be a great way to find out.

CLSG Ski Trip

Our ski trip started as any other City trip starts out - with an early wakeup and 21 buzzing girls arriving at main reception. Over-sized, brightly coloured baggage in hand, we were registered and piled onto the coach. After several eventful games of paranoia and some loud, boisterous ‘singing’ of Harry Potter in 99 seconds, we arrived at the airport. The check-in was smooth so we arrived at our gate on time and boarded our plane. It was a long journey and I was proud of the teachers and the surrounding passengers for putting up with over-excited and chatty teenage girls for eight hours. Air Canada were fantastic and looked after us really well. By the time we arrived at the hotel (Canada is five hours behind the UK) everyone was exhausted so we had time to have some quick supper and then we laid down on our beds and fell asleep. The teachers probably hoped it was going to be like this every night!

European Youth Parliament

After qualifying at the European Youth Parliament regional competition at the Foreign Office, we were invited back to the national debating finals at Durham University.

Our four day trip consisted of a whole day of team games including our favourite, chicken pilot. We were split into teams with members from the thirteen other schools and also had the opportunity to take part in committee work, which gave us an insight into the General Assembly which would start the following day. After the opening ceremony and speeches from Durham’s Mayor and MP, the EYP National Finals Autumn Session was declared open. Having submitted a resolution for our debate on the role of the EU in the Middle East and North Africa and preparing for 13 other debates from broad titles, we were finally given the resolutions that the other teams had written. We had a busy evening of General Assembly preparation, gathering points of attack and defence from our research in order to impress the judges. We also had to write an attack speech for each resolution in case our committee was selected to present this.
