11+ Art Scholarship Requirements:

Subsequent to the entrance examination, girls who have qualified for an interview and have applied for an art scholarship will be required to submit their portfolio. Following a portfolio inspection, girls may be invited to sit for a 30 minute Art Scholarship Drawing Examination. A member of the Art department will also interview girls. The scholarship is worth £1,500 per annum for five years.  

Portfolio

Qualities we are looking for:

• Evidence of a commitment to art beyond what would be usual in a 10/11 year old.
• Good drawing in any media.
• Attending classes and courses outside school or evidence of independent work undertaken at home.
• Good work produced at school in art classes, as well as artwork associated with project work for other subjects.
• Work that shows an understanding and knowledge of the work of artists.
• Work in variety of media and showing a willingness to experiment.
• Confident use of colour.
• 3D and /or design work.
• Sensitivity/awareness of the subject matter and use of materials.

Portfolio guidance: Each candidate must provide one portfolio, clearly labelled with her name, address and current school. The portfolio should be a selection of recent work. Any 3D work should be photographed.  Work should be simply and clearly presented, though it is not necessary to mount work. Please do no present any framed work.

Interview

The candidate should:

• Speak with enthusiasm about her work and what she is interested in.
• Be able to use appropriate language to describe her work.
• Discuss visits made to galleries/exhibitions.
• Have a lively open mind with lots of ideas and a willingness to experiment.

16+ Art Scholarship Requirements:

The scholarship is worth £1,500 per annum for two years to a girl studying Art in the Sixth Form. Candidates will be interviewed during the course of the morning by the Head of Art and will have a drawing examination assessment exercise of 40 minutes duration in the afternoon.  

Portfolio

Work for the portfolio should represent the range of abilities and interests of the candidate. Unnecessary repetition is not encouraged and work should be presented in a way which is easy to handle and understand.   It is not necessary to mount work on card and work/sketch books should be included.   

Qualities we are looking for:

• Evidence of ability and commitment to art beyond what would be usual in a 15/16 year old.
• Excellent drawing skills in any media.
• Attending classes and courses outside school and/or evidence of independent work undertaken at home.
• Exceptional work produced at GCSE level which shows an ability to develop ideas and produce personal, informed responses.
• An understanding and knowledge of the work of artists and an ability to make connections between the candidate’s work and the work of others.
• Work in variety of media which shows a willingness and ability to experiment.
• Confident use of colour.
• 3D and /or design work.
• Sensitivity/awareness of the subject matter and use of appropriate materials and processes.

Interview

The candidate should:

• Communicate their passion for the subject.
• Be able to use an appropriate visual vocabulary to describe her work and the work of artists.
• Discuss visits made to current galleries/exhibitions with her school and independently.
• Talk knowledgeably about the work of artist/designers and how she has applied that knowledge to the development of her own ideas.
• Have a lively open mind.

Scholarship Drawing

All candidates are given the same conditions and materials. The task usually takes the form of drawing from a group of objects. The drawing should show:

• A confident ability to record form and space accurately and with expression.
• Fluent use of the drawing medium.
• Mature consideration of composition.
• Awareness of the qualities of objects within the still life group and the group as a whole.
• Appropriate use of the formal elements of art and design.
