Edward Heath, Benazir Bhutto and William Gladstone lined the walls of the chamber of the Oxford Union as we stepped out onto the floor in this year’s Oxford Union International Competition for Young Debaters. But these grand busts were far less intimidating than the panel of Oxford University student judges assembled to test our skill over four rounds of debating on controversial issues of today.
The Colton Memorial Lecture was given by Lord Winston on Tuesday 29th April. He posed the pressing and controversial question, "When does life begin?" to the audience of current and past students.
He maintained that human life begins with the development of the mind and of consciousness and spoke about the relationship of ethical principles and scientific understanding surrounding reproduction. "Ethics need to be informed by the best possible science," stated Lord Winston.
Tennis:
Two pairs from Year 7 and 8 played against Channing with excellent results, seeing City win all of their sets.
