Scenes of elation have been commonplace at City of late, as girls discover the results of their public examinations. A-Level students were thrilled to learn they earned a combined result of 99.6% A-B grades, while GCSE students celebrated a combined result of 93.2% A*-A grades. Girls in the Preparatory Department joined in the celebrations, with every girl in Upper 2 scoring Level 5 Key Stage Two tests in English, Maths and Science tests. It is the fourth time in the past five years that the Prep Department has achieved such remarkable results, but individual marks were the highest ever with an astonishing 17 papers scoring 97% or above.
The School accredits the truly exceptional success to students’ unwavering commitment, a team of dedicated teaching staff and a belief that education means much more than exam results. Miss Vernon, Headmistress, stated, “I am delighted that our students’ dedication and perseverance has resulted in their achieving superb results in their A-Level, GCSE and Key Stage 2 examinations. These results are evidence of the energy and determination girls’ put into their studies and also the professionalism and dedication of their teachers. I am so proud of their richly deserved success.”
Miss Vernon added, “Whilst these are excellent results, education is about much more than examination grades and importantly the girls have all contributed to and achieved in many other areas of their lives.”
Mr Brough, Head of the Preparatory Department, concurred, saying, "We emphasise a broad, balanced and creative curriculum throughout the Prep Department and our classes are certainly not designed to ‘teach to the test’. Even when we are developing examination techniques in the period immediately before the assessments, we continue our programme of day trips, residential visits and our wide range of extra-curricular opportunities including sports, drama, music and languages.”
Girls experience this richness within the School, and develop an enjoyment of learning, which enables the students to perform so impressively under examination conditions. Their achievements put them in good stead for their futures, whether they are continuing at City, taking a gap year to travel, work and study or fulfilling their university dreams.
