London Youth Games 2009

Most of the London Youth Games took place in July with some sports being played earlier in the year, and a number of girls from City of London School for Girls were part of the City Squad who represented the City of London Borough.  Five of these joined their male counterparts from City of London to take part in the Indoor Rowing event at the Games. The 10 participants (including City girls) fought off tough competition from all 33 boroughs to reach gold for the second year running. It was commented more than once from the crowd that City showed superior technique and real grit compared to the other teams.

The girls tag rugby team received bronze after a narrow defeat at the semi final stage. The 12 strong team wholly from City of London School for Girls was seen to span, sprint and dodge to receive the bronze medal.  A total of 33 teams  took part in this event.

Earlier in the year the girls cricket team, made up wholly of girls from our school, won a bronze medal narrowly missing the play off for gold and silver.

The City Squad entered over 30 different sporting events and the girls took part in a wide selection of competitions including Gymnastics, Squash, Badminton, Netball, Tag Rugby, Football and Indoor Rowing to name but a few. The diversity of the sports in which the Squad took part, demonstrated the range of sports offered to students at City of London School for Girls.

Out of the 260 young people who represented the City of London Borough in competitions at the London Youth Games, 81 were from the City of London School for Girls. Two of the three medals won by the City Squad were girls only competitions. The third medal was a mixture of girls and boys.

Amber Topes performance was by all accounts outstanding playing an integral part in the highest netball result EVER for the City of London Borough!

The squads were supported by the dedicated PE department at both schools with Ann McLean, Head of PE at City of London School for Girls offering encouragement and support to the girls in preparation for this increasingly popular event.
