Chemistry

Chemical reaction
Students studying Chemistry investigate the basic structure of matter, theories which surround matter and various interplaying relationships. Students acquire an understanding of the concepts, principles and applications of Chemistry, enabling them to become confident in a technological world. The subject can be challenging, but it is also increasingly rewarding once concepts are grasped and then applied in a practical laboratory project.

KEY STAGE 3

Students will learn the fundamental principles of Chemistry and will engage in topics including particles, solutions, metals, gases, elements and compounds, energy and atomic structure. All classes are taught within a dynamic laboratory environment and coursework includes both theoretical learning and practical experimentation.

GCSE

We stimulate students curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Chemistry. Students will come to understand many of the things that go on around us and, wherever possible, relate chemical ideas to everyday life. Girls address topics such as:

  • What are the social, environmental and economic effects of exploiting limestone and using it as a building material and in the manufacture of glass, concrete and cement?
  • What are the benefits, drawbacks and risks of using metals as structural materials and smart materials?
  • What is the environmental impact of burning hydrocarbon fuels? What developments are taking place to produce alternative fuels, such as ethanol and hydrogen?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of making ethanol from renewable and non-renewable sources? What are the benefits, drawbacks and risks of using vegetable oils for fuel?
  • How can chemical analysis be used to identify additives in foods?
  • Why can’t we predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions accurately?
  • What are the potential advantages of new materials such as nanomaterials and smart materials?

Sixth Form Chem

SIXTH FORM

Studying Chemistry in the Sixth Form extends the knowledge and skills students learn at GCSE level, as well as demonstrating to students the constructive worth of Chemistry in society. The course contains both theoretical and practical elements and there are opportunities for students to attend lectures at the Royal Institution and King’s College.
