Biology

Biology is a fascinating subject. Students discover, observe, enquire and analyse the wonders of nature and their relationship to it. Girls study microbes to mammals, fungi to fossils and how humans, as the most technically advanced species on earth, can try to preserve the brilliant and complex diversity around us.

KEY STAGE 3

Students learn the key principles of biology and experiment with their new knowledge in a scientific laboratory as well as in the field. Girls learn about adaptations, classification, reproduction, ecology, microbiology, nutrition and how new medicines are developed.

Cells

GCSE

Girls build on their existing knowledge through research, laboratory work and field research. Students also attend external lectures and outside speakers are invited to give talks on topical scientific subjects. Wherever possible, biological ideas are related to everyday life, such as:

  • How are drugs tested before they can be prescribed? Is animal testing necessary?
  • How does your diet affect your health?
  • How can we produce enough food to feed everyone? Is intensive farming ethical? What are the benefits of genetically modified crops?
  • What are stem cells? What are the social and ethical issues concerned with using stem cells from embryos in medical research and treatments?

SIXTH FORM

An awareness of Biology in personal, environmental, economic and technological contexts is developed through the A Level syllabus.  Students also have the chance to conduct field research in a variety of ecosystems during a residential field trip to Pembrokeshire, Wales .
