Physical Education

2009_fencing_thumb.jpg
Sport is an integral part of life at all levels of the school. We pride ourselves on the fact that there should be something for everyone, from team players aiming for excellence to clubs which play the odd fixture to recreational activities such as climbing. We believe in a philosophy of Sport for All and enjoyment plays a large part in this too. Within the curriculum we try to give girls a progressive programme which unfolds each year to give new challenges and different sports to try.

Swim

We have excellent sporting facilities on-site, including netball and tennis courts, a games pitch, a fully-equipped fitness room and a heated swimming pool.  We also have the use of the extensive Honourable Artillery Company playing fields, which are a short and easywalk from the school. We hope at the end of their time with us girls leave City with the skills to carry on their sports, to try new ones and to follow a healthy lifestyle.

GCSE

Physical Education is offered as a GCSE subject, and has both a practical and a theoretical content.  The practical aspect involves assessment in four sports, and can include a sport that is pursued to a high level outside school.  Through the theoretical aspect of the course the girls broaden their knowledge of the relationship between health and fitness. Topics studied include:

The healthy and active body; structure of joints, muscles and the respiratory system
  • Exercise and training; methods of fitness testing
  • Training principles; overload, specificity, progressions, reversability
  • Drugs in sport
  • Local and National sport provision
  • Identifying hazards

The course offers students the possibility to explore all aspects of physical education and girls also take on other roles of responsibility such as umpiring, scoring, leading warm ups and coaching.

“PE is not a soft option, it is demanding and interesting.  The practical work is very varied.” Hannah
