Our first visit was to the centre of Athens. We were delighted to discover the steep hill of the Acropolis on one side of the main square and the intriguing Flea Market on the other. Later in the National Archaeological Museum we saw the contents of the Grave Circles at Mycenae which we were to visit later in the tour.
One grave contained the so-called Mask of Agamemnon.
It was amazing to see objects that had survived for 3,000 years and some of the jewellery was really exquisite.
Cuba was possibly the most vivid and exciting country I have ever visited.
As a country which in the past has often been excluded for political reasons, they have developed an incredible sense of community, as well as a wonderful sense of fun. This was shown through the friendly greetings and the traditional salsa dances – with some groups performing moves which seemed quite frankly impossible. We tried to emulate their success many times although to little avail, finding our own dances a success if everyone managed to stay on their feet!
In December Marianne, Emese and Eleanor accompanied Year 10 on the German Exchange trip to Trier, staying with the same families they stayed with two years ago; however, whilst year 10 were busy visiting museums and mustard factories, they were to be doing work experience. Marianne worked at a law firm, Emese was in a primary school, and Eleanor spent her week at a local radio station - RPR1 - in the news department.
The whole trip was designed to give us the complete history of Berlin in only four days. One might think that this is impossible to accomplish - but not for City girls!
Salamanca is a very historic city, with beautiful cathedrals, and the very famous and stunning Plaza Mayor. During our stay, we visited both Segovia and Zamora, nearby cities with interesting history
and buildings.
Year 12 Spanish students enjoyed the sunny delights of Andalucia in April when they visited the beautiful Jerez de la Frontera. Renowned for its sherry, flamenco music, bullfighting and dancing horses, Jerez is a capital of culture.
In February, City's Physics students joined forces with the Physics Department at City of London School (CLS) and invaded Switzerland to learn more about particle accelerators at CERN, the home of the world’s largest machine, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
On the cold morning of 29th October, 38 Year 8 and 9 students made their way to Stansted airport and then on to Frankfurt. We stayed in Boppard, a small, picturesque German town with a great view of the Rhine.
On July 19th, twenty-five City girls, together with students from CLS and Croydon High School, arrived in China for a two-week stay. With the time difference we arrived at 9am and hit the ground running. We went straight from the airport to our Chinese counterpart, Bayi High School, where we would meet our host families.
On 17thOctober, Ms Gandee, Miss Macko and nineteen City girls departed for a one week exchange to Barcelona. City has been participating in a Year 10 student exchange with Virolai School in Barcelona for the past three years, and each has been a great success; this one was no exception!
