USIP Residential

Last year saw the introduction of a residential weekend. 46 students left London on late on a Friday afternoon in June and headed off to Canterbury. After a minor mishap resulting from creative map reading in deepest Kent, we arrived at the University of Canterbury in time for a relaxing lecture on Thomas a Becket before dinner.

Saturday morning saw us enjoy breakfast before embarking on our morning lessons. We were treated to a lecture by Mrs Sadeque before lunch and spent the afternoon discovering Canterbury Cathedral, learning all about Thomas a Becket and his unfortunate demise. An inspiring lecture on Maths was followed by an opportunity to Go MAD (though not literally) before the real evening entertainment. We researched Becket’s relationship with Henry II and had a lively debate between two vigorous teams. The girls certainly rose to the challenge and in the end the ‘House’ believed it was Becket’s fate was of his own making.

Residential
On Sunday morning we all spent some time revising what we had covered over the previous days or watching natural history documentaries before we left for London in the afternoon. The residential trip had a major impact on some students and helped to forge valuable new friendships, build confidence and offered a welcome chance to see a university campus.

I enjoyed the residential as it gave us the opportunity to interact with people we would not have usually interacted with.
