The Outreach Programme at City is run in parallel with our charitable, student led society, Mission, and focuses on developing dynamic relationships with communities beyond the physical boundaries of the school. City students are aware of the contrasting dynamics in our neighbourhood; while the 'Square Mile' is the focal point of the Nation's wealth, the boroughs surrounding the City are amongst the poorest in the United Kingdom.
These fringe boroughs are, however areas of rich cultural and ethnic diversity with much to offer. Through the Outreach Programme, City works in equal partnerships with many other schools and organisations, enabling mutual learning from widely differing experience. Unlike many other independent schools, City does not have charitable status, so this status is not a factor in our commitment to Outreach work.
We have been involved in Outreach for several years and this work was intensified with the appointment of an Outreach Co-ordinator in autumn 2003 and the inauguration in spring 2004 of a Consortium of Girls' Independent and State Schools called the East London Consortium of which we are the founding member. The Consortium focuses on gifted and talented education and on the professional development of teachers within its schools.
