Modern Foreign Languages are a valuable asset to students living in an international community. Whether studying French, German, Spanish or Mandarin, Foreign languages are skills that students can utilise for further study, work and leisure.
Similarly, students who study Latin and / or Greek will open the doors to ancient civilisations and cultures. These subjects also assist students' studies across the curriculum.
Students can study French from Year 7, though it is also taught in our Preparatory Department. We insist on a communicative and multi-skill approach to language teaching and learning, ensuring students are able to communicate effectively and accurately, hence an equal insistence on the teaching of grammar throughout the school.
We use a communicative and multi-skill approach to language learning, ensuring that students will be able to communicate effectively whilst at the same time developing an awareness of grammatical structures.
We encourage our students at all levels to access extension
materials in order to support independent learning.
Mandarin
Girls study Mandarin in the Preparatory Department as well as in Key Stage 3. This is an exciting addition to the curriculum which is permeating through the school.
Spanish
Students develop comprehension and practical communication skills, considering grammatical correctness and creativity. They also gain an insight into the culture and civilisation of European countries and communities and in turn develop an understanding of themselves and their own culture.
