Government and Politics

SIXTH FORM

Parliament
This is a new subject for students, which aims to provide a clear understanding of the theories, motives and values that underpin the political process and governmental decision-making. It also looks at the role institutions play in resolving conflict. Students will gain a useful insight into the way the UK and USA political systems operate and will have the opportunity to see first hand UK Parliament and Law Courts in operation.

Local and national political events help to shape the curriculum. For instance, recent discussion topics have included the party conference, Blair V Brown and the war in Iraq. Similarly, students also look to the international stage and have debated issues such as Schwarzenegger for the US Presidency, Guantanamo Bay, George Bush and Iraq and the upcoming presidential elections.

This subject keeps me up to date with current affairs, enabling me to participate in political discussions. We are encouraged to evaluate different political theories and models and to form our own opinions. I have found it particularly useful looking at British politics and how our system of government works. It is a valuable subject for life skills; for example learning about different British Political Parties will enable me to make an info rmed decision when I vote in both local and national elections.
