Economics

SIXTH FORM

“My Dad said it was stupid that the government was going to make changes to tax rates.   Telling him that he was wrong, using what I had learnt in Economics lessons, was very satisfying.”

Davina

Economics

Economics is one of the most topical subjects pertaining to life outside of the classroom that students can study in the Sixth Form. They develop the ability to argue their own opinions using economic theory with logical analysis, while being given extensive support in a non-judgemental environment. Girls are encouraged to use current economic controversies in class discussions. Students with an interest in politics or business would find the course enjoyable. Discussion Topics include:

  • How a government deals with unemployment
  • What are the costs and benefits of free trade between nations?
  • What are the best ways to protect the environment?
  • How can economic growth and development be promoted?
  • In what circumstances do firms maximise their profit?

While economic analyses does involve mathematics, predominantly to calculate percentage change and graphical analysis of data, this does not exceed GCSE Maths. However, if girls intend to study Economics at university, they should also study A Level Mathematics.
